How to Stay on Top of Your Industry Or Field of Expertise

Being in the know is paramount to being an expert in your given area of knowledge. If you are the person people go to for information about your topic, you are wise to stay on top of what's happening in your industry or field of expertise. I'll share a few ways to do this. 1. Know Who to Ask.  Someone asked me a question about copyright today. While that is not my area of expertise, I have made many connections through networking. Therefore, I was able to email a copyright expert and give my inquirer an answer within just a few hours. Being a good networker, even if you don't know the answer to your inquirer's question, you should know who to ask. Keep a list of those in your network and know who does what. 2. Research.  Another way I stay on the cutting edge of the book industry is through research. But, rather than having to go out and find information (unless I specifically need something ASAP), I let the information come to me! I set Google Alerts on keywords releva

How about "contemporary"? Go ahead. Take a look around. If a quick glance around your office provides the same image today that it did several years ago, chances have it that your design is missing the mark. By taking a quick inventory of today's business climate, it's easy to see why modern and contemporary are so important. Why Every Start-Up Needs a Grant Writer

A classic explanation provided for failed start-up initiatives is the lack of adequate funding and capital financing. This points to a greater need for evaluating how viable solutions with proven value to society fail to attract investors to buy into the idea. Some common issues acknowledged for this disinterest among investors are the lack of a convincing proposal that highlights the value proposition of the solution, and an ineffectively drafted grant/funding application. Grant writers can help start-ups to prepare funding proposals and business plans effectively because of the following reasons:- Drafting business plans and funding proposals are time-consuming: A proposal writer provides a start-up with undivided attention in the formulation of a document that captures the organization's values, value proposition, and expectations. A grant writer consults for the start-up on the different available funding structures suitable for their type of initiative: This requires intensive

10 Reasons Your Nonprofit Should Continue to Send Out Letters in the Mail

A couple of days ago a member of my team was talking about several fundraising ideas one of our partners was putting together, and one of their efforts included placing letters in the mail. Candidly, I was a bit surprised because so many nonprofits have stopped mailing letters and instead have almost exclusively transitioned all of their marketing and fundraising appeals to digital. It might sound counter-intuitive at the age of the $0.49 postage rate for a first class letter in comparison to reaching thousands of donors paying as little as $5 for a post. But, printed letters and postcards mailings should remain part of your marketing mix, at least to some of your donors. House file:  Presumably you have a house file of donors and prospects with whom you have a regular relationship. Today's world is dense with content, especially in the digital world. Our social enterprise emails regularly to our house file, and we have a response rate that can sometimes exceed 10 percent. Multi-ch

Stay Ahead of Your Nonprofit Competitors With Expiring Content

Do you find that your organization is trying to figure out how to stay ahead of other groups that share a similar mission to yours? Have you realized that your nonprofit has a lot of support from Millennials and Gen Z? Do you want to do something different for a unique fundraising, marketing or mission awareness campaign? The answer for you may be to add expiring content to your marketing strategy. Fear of Missing Out Expiring content is quickly becoming a staple in social media marketing efforts in business because it is driven by the "fear of missing out," or FOMO for short. Marketers have known for decades that people don't want to miss out on an opportunity. The best salespeople understand that to make a sale you want to appeal to emotion and then help the consumer, or in the case of nonprofits, donors rationalize it. Your charitable organization or group can take advantage of the fear of missing out and the ability in today's world to create expiring content. Wha

Is Direct Mail Still Effective?

I'm often asked, "Which is better, email marketing or direct mail marketing?" While email is a very effective medium for communicating and selling customers - from the perspective of prospecting (finding NEW customers) - I feel direct mail is much more effective, and here are 7 reasons why: HIGHER RESPONSE.  When searching for "new" customers, study after study proves regular mail will generate more new customers than email. A recent study by the DMA (Direct Marketing Association) shows direct mail is 10 to 30 times more effective than email. HIGHER DELIVERY RATE.  A good mailing list is typically 95% deliverable. On the other hand, the great majority of email lists being advertised have a delivery rate of below 50%. Also, due to the constant onslaught by spammers, the ISPs (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc) are beginning to block unsolicited emails... and for this reason, some are predicting the demise of email "prospecting."
